Tetsuya Noda and Tadayoshi Nakabayashi are two highly respected and world-renowned printmakers from Japan. Their remarkable artwork is featured in the collections of museums and prestigious institutions around the globe. Honored as artists of their generation, these two nearly 90-year-olds continue to create art with love and dedication, as if it has deep-rooted and become an inseparable part of their lives.
While their works of art are characterized by a similar monochrome tone, they differ significantly in concept and technique. Tetsuya Noda aims to capture the general perspectives of life through his art, which resembles a personal "DIARY." He employs complex printmaking methods that he has developed himself. Starting from a photograph he took, the artist uses traditional woodblock techniques and slik screen printing, then rearranges the composition using collage techniques. He applies light values and monochromatic colors to evoke an atmosphere in a mysterious space. On the other hand, Tadayoshi Nakabayashi is captivated by the contrast and harmony between black ground and white light, as his series of artwork entitled 'FROM GROUND TO LIGHT.' He utilizes intaglio techniques such as etching, drypoint, and aquatint to create an atmosphere of balance between the white background of paper and the black ink lines in the foreground. This contrast serves as a metaphor for the interplay between light and shadow, day and night, and life and death.
